by W. Y. Fullerton
Marshall, Morgan & Scott, 1932.
Fullerton wrote my favourite hymn, “I cannot tell why He, whom angels worship”.
On looking him up I discovered that he had also written several devotional books, so I read this particular one. It is a fairly basic summary of the Bible’s message. On pages 57-58, he recounts a story by Watts Dunton, which I had not heard before. It is of a girl reading the Bible and a man asks her:
“What book are you reading?”. “The Word of God, sir.” “Who told you that the Bible is the Word of God?” said her questioner. “God Himself, sir.” “Impossible,” he answered. “How could God tell you?” […] after a pause the girl took the part of the questioner. “Sir, who told you that there is a sun in the blue sky.” “Who? nobody. I do not need anybody to tell me, the sun tells me.” “Yes,” she said in triumph, “and that is the way God tells me.” “As I read I feel His light and warmth.”
